Astro Group Donates Rp 13 billion for Scholarships

Jakarta (Media Indonesia: (01/07/07) Satellite television services Astro and investment company Usaha Tegas Group have donated US$ 1.5 million (approximately Rp 13 billion) to the Sampoerna Foundation to establish the Astro Asih Scholarships Program.
The scholarships will be channeled to 725 high school and 160 undergraduate students in Bali. The donation was presented symbolically by Rohana Rozhan, Chief Executive Officer, of Astro Malaysia and Brunei, to the Sampoerna Foundation CEO Elan Merdy, in Jakarta last Friday. (29/6). At the occasion, Rohana Rozhan said that Astro Group’s scholarships program is aimed at helping education development in Indonesia. Bali is chosen, according to Rohana, because Balinese community’s capacity to finish higher learning is low. “Currently, Bali records as many as 125,809 school-age children from poor families. These poor school-age children are quite likely to drop out of school before earning their diploma due to lack of financial support,” said Rohana who is certain that through education, children could improve the quality of life and to develop a better future.
